spiders

All spiders have silk glands, although not all use silk in spinning webs. When drawn and stretched from the spinnerets, located at the rear of the abdomen, the liquid silk solidifies into tiny strands that are both strong and elastic. It may require more than 80 grams of stress to break a thread of silk only .1mm in diameter. Spiders us silk for web-building, for capturing prey, for sperm transfer, for lining hibernating, molting or living chambers and constructing egg cases, for draglines and mating bowers, and spiderlings use silk for windborne travel.

the natural history and ecology of crocodilians is fascinating.

A number of crocodilian species are exploited for their valuable skins, a natural commodity that earns over US $200 million annually in international sales. The high fashion leather goods made from the skins earn ten times that amount in retail sales. The CSG actively monitors this trade, identifies legal and illegal crocodilian skins and products, and participates in national and international forums to develop laws and regulations that support crocodilian conservation.
In 1971, when the CSG began, all 23 species of crocodilian were endangered or threatened. By 1996, after 25 years of effort, one-third of the species (8) were sufficiently abundant to support well-regulated annual harvests, one-third of the species (8) were no longer in danger of extinction but are not harvested, and one-third of the species (7) remain endangered. No other group of vertebrate animals has undergone such a dramatic improvement in its conservation status.
The key to this success is the cooperation of companies involved in the international reptile skin and leather trade, crocodilian farmers and ranchers, skin traders, tanners, manufacturers, fashion designers, and major retailers. Today, the crocodilian skin industry views conservation as an investment in the future that is equivalent to investing in new equipment and technology. Many of the companies contribute to conservation projects and actively curtail illegal trade

bird day

Fitting for this year’s theme, “Collisions: Clear the Way for Birds!”, Senator Chafee released a rehabilitated Red-tailed hawk who had suffered a wing injury from colliding with a car. To the delight and cheers of the on-lookers, the hawk flew from the Senator’s hands over a grassland to perch in a nearby tree. The hawk was brought back to health by raptor rehabilitator Vivian Maxson of Born to Be Wild Nature Center in Bardford, Rhode Island.

Birds

Birds are vertebrates with feathers, modified for flight and for active metabolism. Birds are a monophyletic lineage, evolved once from a common ancestor, and all birds are related through that common origin. There are a few kinds of birds that don't fly, but their ancestors did, and these birds have secondarily lost the ability to fly. Modern birds have traits related to hot metabolism, and to flight:
horny beak, no teeth
large muscular stomach
feathers
large yolked, hard-shelled eggs. The parent bird provides extensive care of the young until it is grown, or gets some other bird to look after the young.
strong skeleton
There are about 30 orders of birds, about 180 families, and about 2,000 genera with 10,000 species. Most of them don't live in Michigan, though there are about 400 species that do.

Frogs are as common to garden ponds as they are to woodl, and nearly every school child is confidently acquainted with frogspawn.
More species of frog live across the globe, but the one found is somewhat disparagingly known as the Common Frog . The pet of school projects and fairy tale legends is largely terrestrial outside of the breeding season and can be found lurking among tall plants in meadows . On evenings they emerge to hunt their invertebrate prey, which they catch with a long tongue. In the spring, frogs become aquatic. They breed in any area of still, water, and canals.
Frogs are cold blooded and unable to function when the outside temperature drops too low. Most species benefit from a natural antifreeze system, but frogs to especially cold climates can even survive being frozen solid. Common frogs hibernate throughout the winter either under logs on land or at the muddy bottom of a pond. Frogs are able to breathe through their skin and can therefore happily spend several months underwater..

Under your house, was a stone root cellar with an entrance framed with rocks and a big . Papa went to fetch some canned goods for me. As he opened the door and walked through, a big dark snake, about six long, dropped from over the door. After a month had passed with no more signs of the invaders, we were once again on cellar duty. Being scared to death of snakes, I would talk my brother into doing my share. When ppapa learned of my fears to enter the cellar again, she forced me to ass and overcome them. We had several cardboard boxes, one stacked inside the other,. Mommy gave the command that . In my panic and desperate appeal, I pleaded for her not to make me . Tear filled eyes and throbbing heart, the 15 year old picked up the stacked boxes and proceeded toward the old cellar.
